He was selling so well […] he said at a certain point he was painting money. And his work was selling sight unseen and he was making a shitload of money in advertising and painting. None of it meant anything to him. So he stopped showing, he applied for a Guggenheim Fellowship – which he got. And— a famous family story which turns out to be true because I recently got a copy of the application— he says:
I paint for the same reason I splash in the bathtub.
